La Hougue is a fort built out on an outcrop of rock that juts out into the sea near the port of St Vaast La Hougue. The fort walls are built around the rocks and out in the sea on its south side with a 12 foot (4 metre) drop on each side.

The fort was built in 1694 by Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban a military engineer and Marshall of France. Originally planned to be self-sufficient, with cisterns and magazines, that would enable between 40 and 80 men to withstand a siege.

The outcrop was caused by the tides, the lighter rocks and silts moving easily with the currents making it possible at low tides to walk out to the neighbouring island of Tatihou. The Granite the fort is built on is more permanent causing a shallow bay to form on the land side ideal for oyster beds.

practical uses in, Geology, and Cartography. The process is known as Stereographic Projection.
