The Youtube thumbnail is becoming part of music creation. Realistically unless you have thousands of subscribers its hard to get your work seen in the general noise of youtube.
In terms of creativity the thumbnail needs ideally to be 1280 x 768 pixels. youtube help page
If you are making music it might help to think of the thumbnail as a replacement for the album cover.
In place of the traditional square format you have a 16:9 format to work with instead.
